Both have real strengths. Wood burning fire features deliver the classic crackle, aroma, and ambiance of a real fire, and they typically produce more heat. The trade-off is that you need to source firewood, tend the fire, and clean out ashes. Natural gas and propane fire features turn on instantly with a switch or remote, burn clean without smoke or ash, and require essentially no maintenance. Gas is typically the better choice for homeowners who want to use the fire feature frequently and spontaneously, while wood burning is better for traditionalists who love the ritual. Absolutely. Oklahoma’s climate allows fire feature use for the vast majority of the year. Fire pits extend patio season well into fall and winter, and covered outdoor fireplaces under a pavilion or pergola can be used comfortably year-round. In summer, fire features still work beautifully for evening ambiance, cool early mornings, and pool-deck gatherings. Many of our clients use their fire features 9-12 months out of the year, especially when paired with a covered patio or pergola that provides wind protection.

Permit requirements depend on the type of fire feature, fuel source, and location. Small portable fire pits typically don’t require permits. Custom-built masonry fire pits and outdoor fireplaces — especially those connected to natural gas lines or built near structures — usually do require permits in Tulsa, Bixby, Jenks, Owasso, Broken Arrow, and surrounding communities. Gas line work almost always requires permits and inspection. The good news is that we handle all permitting as part of our turnkey service, so you don’t have to navigate city requirements yourself.

Safe distances depend on the fire feature type and local codes. As a general rule, wood burning fire pits should be at least 10-15 feet from any structure, overhang, or combustible material. Gas fire features can often be installed closer because they produce less ember risk and are easier to control. Outdoor fireplaces designed for patio use can be built directly against a wall or under a properly designed covered patio when constructed to code with correct clearances, proper chimneys, and spark arrestors. We evaluate every installation site carefully to ensure your fire feature is both safe and compliant with local requirements.

Oklahoma’s climate — with its temperature extremes, humidity, freeze-thaw cycles, and occasional ice storms — demands durable, properly installed materials. We build fire features using full masonry construction with natural stone, cultured stone, stucco, brick, or decorative block. These materials hold up to decades of Oklahoma weather when installed correctly with proper drainage and quality mortar. We also use Belgard’s Weston Stone and Bordeaux Series products, which are engineered specifically for outdoor durability. Avoid metal fire rings or prefab kits if you want a fire feature that will still look great in 20 years.
